Six members of the Iraqi National Guard have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint north-east of Baghdad.
Police said the base was attacked by gunmen using automatic weapons and anti-tank rockets.
One of the gunmen is said to have died in the incident near the town of Baquba. Four guardsmen were also hurt.
Two Iraqi children, an American soldier and an US civilian were killed in separate attacks, just days before the 30 June handover of power.
The two Iraqi boys were killed in a mortar attack in central Baghdad.
They were playing football near the Tigris river when at least two mortar rounds landed nearby. Eight other children were injured.
Also on Sunday, a US transport aircraft was hit by gunfire after take-off from Baghdad and one American civilian on board the aircraft was killed.
A separate rocket attack on a US base in Baghdad killed an American soldier.
The latest attacks came after the pledge by Iraq's interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to crush the insurgents.
But Mr Allawi stressed he would distinguish between foreign militants and Iraqis who may have acted against the occupation out of desperation.
The prime minister knows he faces a huge challenge and not just in trying to stop the violence, the BBC's Caroline Hawley in Baghdad says.
Mr Allawi has acknowledged the country's dire economic problems and its lack of services and he has spoken of a crisis of credibility that his government will have to address, our correspondent adds.
